THE L.C. DOANE COMPANY

Twenty-first Century Lighting aboard

The USS WASP

The L. C. Doane Company was recently awarded a contract solicited by the Naval Air Warfare Center to design and manufacture a dual function shipboard lighting system for the USS Wasp with the ability to adjust to various intensity levels including minimum light levels, night vision compatible lighting, as well as survivability of the system in harsh environments. The proposed area to be illuminated accommodates Landing Craft and Air Cushion Vehicles which are stored in the Well Deck of the ship. This internal space is approximately 60' x 300' x 35' high.

The solution was a dual function light fixture incorporating both fluorescent technology and Light Emitting Diodes (LED). Eighty addressable light fixtures were installed in the Well Deck. The system is controlled by a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) with a touch screen interface. The operator can select white fluorescent light or LED light sources from a central control station. Light fixtures can be controlled in various groups, as well as dimming of the LED's. The system records operating time as well as the number on/off cycles for each light fixture. Light levels are approximately double the existing system while consuming half the power. It is expected that lamp life will increase by a factor of 10!
